Oh! Susanna

By EverydayJill

This reminds me of a song…

Oh! Susanna, Oh! don’t you cry for me”, the old song written by Stephen Foster -could we turn it inside out to say “I’m not crying, you’re crying”?! This would be most fitting for this story.

Susanna is a a old gal that I fell in love with, at first sight. The feeling was not mutual. She appeared in a photo on an estate sale site. Oh! Susanna. She was a beauty! Yes, there were scratches and scuffs and she was stored in a garage. But there was beauty. “Please still be there” I thought. It was the second day of the estate sale and she would be 25% off…hurry, others may see what I see and snatch her up! As mentioned, she was stored in a garage and furniture pieces can sometimes be overlooked for that reason. Susanna was indeed there, waiting for me. And on sale.

This also reminds me of a song…

The lyrics say: What do you get when you fall in love? You only get lies and pain and sorrow …. Oh! Susanna. We overlooked a hook from the backside where the mirror attached. She made a small tear in the leather of my husband’s vehicle. I’m not crying.

She sat for a few weeks in her new garage, as life was happening. A few weeks passed, my love was growing. She was cleaned, wood filler on the scratches, and sanded. The piece was painted using an all-in-one paint (no priming) HTP color Putty. That went smoothly! Maybe she is starting to accept some love? The original hardware was cleaned and painted. The drawers were decoupaged with Re-Design by Prima, “Shabby Floral”. She had 3 of the 4 original casters attached to her legs. One was removed easily. She began to resist again. Oh, Susanna. I’m not crying. The last two required muscle and some ingenuity by my handsome assistant. He found vintage replacements online and attached without too much trouble.

Now to address that top- it was a mess. And she resisted all the way. Again, I’m not crying. It was sanded, scraped, bleached, color washed, Retique-It applied, and finally stained a coffee color.

Oh! Susanna! How beautiful you have become! Paint and Love had finally won her heart. I am crying!

To finish the song-“So for at least until tomorrow, I’ll never fall in love again!” Well, at least until tomorrow, that is….
